While tunic style sweaters are versatile and go with
just about anything for any occasion, some rules apply. One of my biggest rules is to avoid wearing
them with skirts. They look strange,
don’t go well together, and I completely advise against it. Next, you should also avoid wearing a loose
fitting tunic sweater with baggy or loose fitting
jeans or wide legged pants.
I’ve never mentioned this in any of my
other tunic posts however; you actually can wear a tunic sweater for women with shorts. Just make
sure the shorts are long enough, shorty shorts will disappear under the length
of a tunic and it will look like you aren’t wearing anything underneath. The shorts need to poke out under the hem of a long tunic sweater.
Do this in the fall/winter transition so you don’t freeze your legs
off. Think of this as the final farewell
to summer look. As the weather gets
colder you begin to dress for it. Wear a
cute pair of wedges to help make your legs look a little longer while holding
onto summer.
If you add a belt to a tunic sweater,
either leave the necklace at home or wear a nice subtle one because you don’t
want to have too much going on up top. A
big billowy type of tunic sweater can be tamed with a jacket.
A slouchy tunic sweater should always be
worn with leggings, tights, or skinny jeans because loose baggy pants will look
completely sloppy. Feel free to wear
slim fitting pants and slacks, or even capri pants if you wish. Footwear doesn’t matter too much with a tunic
sweater. For casual look go with
sneakers, for professional wear flats or heels.
Finally, if you absolutely cannot part with
your skirts, you may as well forgo the tunic sweater top and go for a full
length tunic sweater dress.
