When talking about sunglasses, the Ray Ban Wayfarers may already be regarded as the perfect combination of being lightweight, comfortable, trendy, and classy. However it does not mean that this particular Ray Ban model has enjoyed a flight of crystal stairs towards success (and of course, profitability).
Designed
in the 1950s, the manufacture and promotion of Ray Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses were already perceived as transformational and maybe even
a bit rebellious compared to their metal-framed contemporaries. The period of the
1950s throughthe 1960s was witness to the rise in popularity of Wayfarer glasses. The fame and fandom of these eyeglasses
back then were attributed mainly to the celebrities sporting them. Public
figures like Roy Orbison, former head of state John F. Kennedy, and musician Bob
Dylan all prominently wore Wayfarers sunglasses.
Men's Wayfarer sunglasses were heavily
exposed and promoted through the hit movie "The Blues Brothers" in
the 1980s, yet it was not enough to turn around the decline in sales. As a
result, there had been plans for discontinuing the production of sunglasses Wayfarer model altogether.
Luckily Ray Ban management did not give up in that period of turmoil; the
company landed a deal which placed Ray Ban Wayfarers in
Hollywood movies and TV shows. A hefty sum was paid, but later events would
show Ray Ban reaping the result of that "investment" in marketing, as
Wayfarer style sunglasses became a necessary fashion accessory
in widely-followed films, television shows and ads, magazines, and even photos
of celebrities with or without endorsements!
During
the 1990s, the Wayfarer design got another major dip, and was almost neglected
to the point of being forgotten by the public at large. A more modern version
was conceptualized, born, and consequently mass-produced in the early 2000s,
allowing for the Ray Ban sunglasses Wayfarer model to
resurface and be hugely popular again.
Today, Wayfarers are regularly worn by celebs and trendsetters. People who want
comfortable, classic fashion with a modern twist, almost have a pair of Ray Ban Wayfarer glasses in their kits.
